Our January classes begin next week, January 10th.  We are offering classes for all ages ~ even a Teen Mixed Media class, so help us max them out!  As always, all supplies are included in the cost of the class so you only have to walk in our door.  Sign up soon so we don't have to cancel classes!  Please note:  ARTichokes follows the Shawnee Mission School District regarding school closings for inclement weather.  In the event of bad weather, we will update the website, all registered students will be called and classes will be rescheduled.  classes

CURRENTLY SHOWING:
We are currently showing paintings by David Gross, Kay Tucker and new abstracts by Ray Wolf.  We loved Sandee Sander's work so much that we've extended her show as well.  Becky Pashia's paintings are now at ARTichokes, next door at Room 39 and at Tavern in the Village in Prairie Village.  Kristin Goering and William Rose each have a few pieces at ARTichokes as well.  To see all of the art at ARTichokes or at our Art Around Town locations, visit www.artichokeskc.com.

ARTichokes is about to be a VERY inspiring place to visit after a delicious lunch date in Mission Farms!

ART NEWS:
We are excited to announce some changes at ARTichokes coming mid-January!  When William Rose's show comes down from the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in mid-January, he will have a permanent display and studio space in our gallery.  Kristin Goering and Becky Pashia will have a "wet wall" and display space as well.  In fact, there may be a couple of other professional artists painting at ARTichokes as well....  You'll have to come by often to see what is going on!

A new painting by William Rose is now for sale.  Click here to see the image.  The woman in the painting worked on the set of the movie, Carmel by the Sea, which is due to be in theaters this March.  ARTichokes hopes to rent out a whole theater for a special movie night to see the show with Bill, so be watching for that event this Spring!

GROUP PAINTINGS:
We have been scheduling a lot of Group Paintings and team building events thanks to past customers who tell their friends about their experience at ARTichokes.  We just want to say THANK YOU!  Word of mouth has proven to be our best advertising and we really appreciate it!!

ART CLUB:
Due to a lack of time, we've decided to put our ART Club on hiatus for 2012.  However, to thank our 2011 members, we would like to extend their club discounts at ARTichokes for 2012.  This Club idea is not gone forever, but we simply have so much going on that we can't wrap our brains around it right now!

DID YOU KNOW?
Mark Rothko is a favorite artist of Samantha Buller, one of ARTichokes' favorite artists.   Rothko was poor for much of his career.  In 1961, at age 58, a major show at the Museum of Modern Art, New York gave him great fame and financial success.  Unfortunately Rothko struggled with depression and suffered two unhappy marriages.  It is said that he had a prickly temperament, drank heavily, and was fearful & suspicious of young artists.  His paintings, which began very bright and vibrant early in his career, became very somber with browns and blacks.  Rothko influenced the modern art movement so much, and yet slashed his own wrists in his studio at age 66.  (See a sample of Rothko's work at the bottom of this newsletter.)

" ...the fact that one usually begins with drawing is already academic.  We start with color." -Mark Rothko

See you at ARTichokes!!
