About the Instructor

Valda Hsu was born to do art. She began to draw before she could write her name. Prior to her journey to the U.S., she received advanced training in traditional Chinese brush painting with landscape master Yu Wei.

She earned her B.F.A. in Illustration Design and Fine art from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Soon after graduating, she was recruited by Hallmark Cards, Inc. and moved to the Midwest to begin her career as an in-house artist.

Her passion for creative growth in Chinese brush painting and the visual arts brought her to teach art in Kansas City, which she has now done for over 14 years. She currently teaches courses in Chinese brush painting for adults at the Kansas City Art Institute, Ford Learning Center at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Confucius Institute at KU, and ACED Program through UMKC and Longview Community College. Valda also teaches Chinese Art to younger students through Kansas City Young Audiences. As Special Teaching Artist, she brings her programs to more than 35 schools annually, including schools in Shawnee Mission, Kansas City, Independence, Liberty, North Kansas City, as well as the Kansas City and Mid Continent Public Libraries.

Each year, the Nelson Foundations invites Valda to do a Chinese brush painting demonstration in the Nelson Atkins Chinese art gallery in the museum during their annual Chinese New Year's celebration.

Valda has exhibited watercolor art in First Friday openings in Downtown Kansas City in 2007.  Her artwork has been commissioned by private individuals as well as business owners including Kyoto Sushi Steak House in Overland Park, Kansas.
