When I was a child I discovered that drawing and writing my thoughts and feelings in a notebook allowed me to understand and process the world around me more easily.  My painting today is much the same – I extract from the things I see, feel and hear, and then process and distill them.  My paintings are simply metaphors of my words and feelings.

A new, pure white canvas is perfect in its starkness; every color and brush stroke I add must have necessity and purpose.  I think of a painting like a well written poem in which the unnecessary words have been removed, and each remaining word has been deemed essential and powerful in its completeness. 

I often dream about a painting, sometimes for several nights, before I begin it. The colors are vivid in my mind and the work on it becomes compulsory, exhilarating and exhausting.  A painting may go through many stages in what can best be described as a love/hate relationship, but in the end the paint talks to me and we resolve our issues.
