Sara Larson was born in Missouri in 1983 where she works and lives today. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Central Missouri in Studio Painting.  Larson has participated in numerous national juried exhibitions, winning the title of Best of Show in the “Women in the Arts” Exhibition in Columbia, MO while still in college.  The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago purchased a painting for its prestigious collection following her participation in its 2007 Juried Exhibition.  Larson’s art is held in corporate and private collections throughout the US.

Because of her use of explosive colors against a stark landscape—often with a whimsical air—she has been compared to the Fauvists.  Larson’s work entails the best aspects of both Impressionism and Modernism.  The inspiration of light and the Midwest’s captivating woodlands inspire her vivid landscapes. 

Larson started with colored pencils, graduating to watercolors and pastels and then on to the versatility of acrylics.  Since the acrylic medium allows her to build layers of pure color Larson is able to establish a vibrant texture across the canvas.  The result is as much delineated form as landscape.  Her abstracts are layered and textured.

Larson says her work is inspired completely by nature.  Her contemporary “twist” of non-local colors encourages the viewer to appreciate the beauty of the structures and forms within nature.  This is not surprising given the fact that Larson’s most important influences (though not exclusively) are the Post Impressionists.  She takes that inspiration into her abstract pieces as well.  Her abstracts are organic and also inspired by nature.
