pastel $700 About the ArtistMarcia grew up painting with her artist mother, Pat Potucek. Her childhood was filled with chores like helping at art fairs, while her mother did charcoal portraits, under painting canvas with leftover paint, distressing old boards to paint, mixing paste for paper mache'. She graduated from Marymount College, Salina KS with a BSN. She worked in public health and as a school nurse for the Shawnee Mission School district, until her retirement in 1987. During her nursing career she painted a thousand watercolors as a hobby. She took numerous art classes at Washburn University, Kansas University, Johnson County Junior College and attended many workshops. One Christmas Marcia's husband, Shawn, gave her a set of Smincke pastels. That small set of soft pastels jump started her professional life as an artist. With pastels she was accepted into many exhibitions including the American Women's Exhibition in Santa Fe and the Pastels Only show in New York. She is a member of the Mid-America Pastel Society and the Pastel Society of America. She has a home studio in Shawnee where she can be found teaching, framing, or painting with watercolors, pastels, oils and acrylics. She also manages a life drawing class at the Buena Vista studio that she started several years ago. Marcia feels that drawing is fundamental to her work. She is inspired to paint the people and her surroundings, finding beauty a simple glance or the sun shining on a red leaf. Sometimes it is the quiet space between houses or the stillness of a snowy day that makes her stop and want to capture it on paper. You can see more of her work at www.streepy.net. She admires the works of John Singer Sargent, Richard Schmid and Mary Cassatt and the many fine Kansas City artists. I hope you enjoy the exhibit. | ![]() ![]() |
