FRIDAY NIGHT FUN by Becky

Wow!  What a great night at ARTichokes!  Lots of people came to watch Allan Chow paint in our studio, and to hear live music by Mason Pashia.  It was so neat to see all the high school kids supporting Mason, adults too!  Allan did a great job creating in organized chaos.  Emilee Keohan ran Open Studio for her last time before leaving for college. See you at holiday time, Emilee!  We will really miss you.  (pictures to right)

OPEN STUDIO & LIVE MUSIC by Becky
Open Studio was wonderful Friday night!  People were painting, others were shopping, and Mark Montgomery played fantastic blues music!  If you haven't come to ARTichokes on Friday night yet, it really is magical.  We love the relaxed, creative atmosphere, and you will too!  Use our art supplies for only $10!  You don't have to bring a thing.  We always have wine and munchies too – or if you prefer, buy food and drink from Room 39 next door and bring it over to our space.  Thanks for making Friday nights so popular!   (photos at right)

THE HORSES & DEER HAVE MOVED ON! by Becky
The incredible hedge wood horse sculptures made by Rachel Wilson, were sadly put into her trailer today and taken back to her home in Reeds, MO.  They are still for sale, however, she says it's time to take them home, buff them and seal them, and get them ready to show again.  Actually, we do have the largest horse, Big Boy, still out by the lake but he looks very lonely now!

If you are interested in purchasing a horse or deer by Rachel Wilson, just let us know at ARTichokes.  We are the only gallery representing her at this time.  She DOES create custom sculptures for clients.  Her prices currently range from $500 - $8,000, but will surely be increasing over the next few years. (photos to right)

We sure will miss them!  Hopefully Mission Farms will buy a couple to keep permanently…  hint, hint

MAY CLASSES by Marissa
The deadline for May classes is quickly approaching!  Don't worry though, you still have a few days to register for that class you might have forgotten to sign up for.

ALSO, we know that the month of May is chaotic for everyone with all the various social events you have.  So, in order to best serve our students, we would be happy to have you pay only for the classes that you CAN attend.   Simply let us know how many classes you will be coming to, and we will have you pay accordingly on the first day of class.

We look forward to seeing you all in class!

CREATIVE KIDS CLASS by Becky
Check out these great daffodil paintings created by the Creative Kids class this month!  We have had a great time learning to mix colors, blend, and experiment with different painting techniques.  I am so impressed with how great this group listens and follows directions.  They are only 4 - 7 years old!  If only my adult students would cooperate so nicely...  ha, just jokin'!  Great job, creative kids!  (photo to right)

EXCITEMENT & LOVE AT ARTICHOKES, by Gina
ARTichokes was filled with the excitement of love last Tuesday afternoon when Chad arranged with us to have a scavenger hunt (unknown to her) for his girlfriend, Jody.  He came in with a framed photo of her engagement ring which we placed on a wall with the art for her to hopefully notice.  They had a nice lunch at Blue Koi and strolled the shops in Mission Farms, then arrived at ARTichokes for the exciting moment.  I greeted them as any other customer, and then let them look around.  Jody walked right past the photo of her ring, making Chad a little nervous, but then she stopped and took a second look and her face was so very surprised.  Chad then dropped to his knee and proposed to her.  She said YES and they then celebrated with a bottle of Champagne.  CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES to the happy couple!!!  (photos to the right)

Just one more week until May classes begin!  Sign up online or call us at (913) 322-9481.  See you in class!

MEGA TEAM-BUILDER EVENT FOR JOHN DEERE
by Becky
ARTichokes was the venue for 3 separate team-builder events for John Deere employees this month!  The guests were from all over the world, even Australia!  It was a smashing success.  Over 140 people got to taste locally made wine by Jowler Creek Winery, sample homemade cheese from The Better Cheddar, drink beer from Flying Monkey Brewery, eat Jack Stack BBQ, and create 18 Group Paintings!  Yes, that is 6 Group Paintings per night…  Kristin and I didn't have much time with each group, but we definitely made the most of it.  Most of the guests had NEVER painted in their lives, and truly enjoyed the process.  It was fun for everyone, and many said it was the best team-builder they had ever attended.  Hooray!  Great job planning this one, Laurie (manager of ARTichokes).  And thank you to Stacy at John Deere for thinking of ARTichokes for this event.  It was a pleasure working with all of you.  We hope it made a great memory for everyone involved.  Watch out, creativity is CONTAGIOUS!

BILLYO O'DONNELL PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP by Marissa
I am so excited to announce that our very own featured artist Billyo O'Donnell will be hosting a two day workshop here at ARTichokes.  This class will allow all of us to stretch our legs, get outside and enjoy some of that beautiful sunshine we have all been craving!

Billyo, whose art is currently being showcased on the front wall at ARTichokes, will be teaching a plein air class May 3rd and 4th from 9am to 4pm.  Students will receive personal instruction from O'Donnell as well as the opportunity to experience parts of Kansas City in a completely new and brilliant way.  There are limited spots available for this class, so give us a call at 913-322-9481 and see if you can be part of this unique experience.

MIKE SAVAGE & ARTICHOKES by Marissa
It seems that ARTichokes just can't get enough of the local phenom, Mike Savage.  In March we teamed up again to support our local high school, Shawnee Mission East, by hosting the artist in our studio to teach some very lucky students.

Each artist bid at the SME auction for a spot in the class, with the proceeds going to benefit the students and school of Shawnee Mission East.  Upon arriving at ARTichokes, the artists were greeted by the always jovial Mr. Savage.  Mike then spent two hours with the class instructing them in all things Savage.  As you can see, he is one first-rate instructor…sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between instructor and student!

BE AN ART COLLECTOR by Becky
Do you want to start collecting art, but find yourself completely intimidated?  It's easy!  Start small, and buy only ORIGINAL art that "speaks" to you.  Don't buy art because it matches your sofa, or is the perfect size – buy it because you can't stand the idea of that piece going home with anyone else.  Don't buy art strictly for a financial return on your investment either – there is no way to guarantee its future value.  Invest in Fine Art because you want to support the artist by adding their piece to your "collection".  Whether $200 or $50,000, the art in your home should be meaningful to you.  Remember, your art says a lot about you to others.  So, are you an art collector?  If not, it's a great time to start!

03/16/10
Spring Break!!  We'll be having Open Studio from 10-3 on Tues, Wed and Thurs this week!  Friday will be an All Day Open Studio from 10-9.  Come paint with us....

03/09/10
Well, our February classes are ending this week.  What a creative time we had!  We will be having Open Studio next week, during Spring Break, for those of you staying in town, and of course, all day on Fridays every week.  Our next classes will begin the first week of April.  Spring is finally coming!  It's about time…

03/03/10

Wow!  Over 12,000 people attend the Homes & Garden Show this weekend and now they all know about ARTichokes!  Gina and I smiled and talked until our mouths went dry – it was actually fun.

You have to come to ARTichokes and check out the horse and deer sculptures made by Rachel Wilson.  These sculptures were running down the middle of our room at the show, and now they are displayed in the field by Los Cabos and by our front door.  They truly are amazing.

What a wild weekend it was!

02/27/10
Join Becky, Gina and Kristin at the Overland Park Convention Center today and tomorrow!  They are hosting the "Art of Decor" room at the Home & Garden Show.  There's a lot of art (25 artists) and it's all 10% off at the Home Show!  Oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, mixed media, glass, furniture, pottery, botanicals, sculptures & more.  Laurie is holding down the fort back at ARTichokes so swing by and say hi.  Photos to the right are from the Home Show.  Be sure to check out those running horses ~ unreal!  Enjoy!

02/21/10
Be sure to come see us at the Overland Park Home Show this weekend!  ARTichokes will be hosting the "Art of Decor" room at the Home Show on Friday, Saturday & Sunday.  We'll have lots of art for sale!  For more details, visit the website.  Also, we will having Open Studio and Live Music on Friday here at ARTichokes.  See you soon!

02/06/10
What a party last night! The Pi Phi Artisans & Angels benefit for the Jordan Robert Mann Foundation was a success.  Lots of people braved the snowy weather to come out and lend their support (see photos at right).  The tent is now gone and soon the art will be too.

Today is the last day of our current show and all of the artwork is 20% off.  Don't forget that ARTichokes will be closed Feb 8-11 while we install our next show.  We will open again at 10am on Friday, Feb 12.  The opening party will be from 6-8.  Come meet the artists and see the new art!

 02/05/10
Today, Friday, is the Artisans and Angels event to benefit the Jordan Robert Mann Foundation!  If you come by ARTichokes, you will see a big white tent in front of our doors.  Thirteen artists are inside selling their unique treasures - come by and shop if you can!  (Don't worry, the tent is heated…)  Plus, all of the ARTichokes inventory is 20% off!  This event will last all day beginning at 11am.  The public is welcome!  However, you need a ticket to come to the cocktail party from 6 – 8pm.  Tickets can be purchased at the door for the cocktail party for $30.  Wear your snow boots and come and see us!  For every $250 that you spend, you will receive a $25 Mission Farms Gift Card.  That's a good deal!

*Beware, our current art show comes down on Saturday.  We will miss this beautiful art…

1/30/10
Becky finished her big commission (6 feet wide) and shipped it to Florida today!  Yippee!  Many of you saw it in its beginning stages.  Well, here it is finished!  We had to wear suntan lotion just to look at it.  She doesn't paint people very often these days, so we thought you might want to check it out.

Also, did you know that all of the "featured art" at ARTichokes is 20% off this week?  Our show will change out next weekend, so don't let a piece that you love get away!  Save the date, the new show opens February 12th.
